| Summary, etc. | « L’art culinaire sert d’escorte à la diplomatie européenne. » Cet aphorisme de Marie-Antoine Carême dans son ouvrage L’art de la cuisine française au xixe siècle. Traité élémentaire et pratique, se vérifie tout particulièrement dans les relations diplomatiques franco-américaines. Si la gastronomie française est synonyme de prestige gastronomique et est appréciée dans le monde entier depuis le xviiie siècle, elle l’est tout particulièrement aux États-Unis. Les ambassadeurs français qui se succèdent à Washington depuis 1893, date à laquelle la France élève sa légation au rang d’ambassade, le comprennent bien. Elle est un outil diplomatique. Ne parle-t-on pas de diplomatie culinaire ? Un bon repas peut avoir une vertu pacificatrice. En période de tensions ou de crises entre la France et les États-Unis, il n’est pas rare que l’ambassadeur organise des dîners à la résidence de Kalorama pour détendre l’atmosphère, maintenir le dialogue ou le renouer entre les deux pays. |

French ambassadors who have succeeded one another in Washington since 1893, when France raised its legation to the rank of embassy, understand it well. It is a diplomatic tool. Are not we talking about culinary diplomacy? A good meal can have a peaceful virtue. In times of tensions or crisis between France and the United States, it is not uncommon for the ambassador to organize dinners at the residence of Kalorama to relax the atmosphere, maintain the dialogue or renew it between the two countries. |
