Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Howard Shevrin tests Freud’s idea (1900) that “the dream is a rebus” and shows that a subliminal exposure to two images forming a rebus (i.e. the images of a pen and of a knee forming the rebus for the word penny) produces rebus associations in participants who were awoken in the rem stage. Our recent studies show that we are able to solve supraliminal riddles unwittingly and regardless of the order of stimuli presented. However, our results also show that this also might be “merely” the result of phonological priming effect by images, that is to say, that only one image is sufficient to call the “rebus” solution. If the unconscious and dreams are indeed rebus puzzles, we will then propose, on the basis of clinical fragments, to interpret them by deciphering a syntax of the figuration of letters within words. |
