Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The distinction between technique and help to the patient is now common when talking of the work of the nurse. The objective of our study was to analyze this distinction using an observation study in a hospital environment in two services, each of a different nature. The study comprised the observation of specific examples of nursing care, and an analysis of current practice for the nurse. Having isolated the nursing care from the rest of the nurse’s work, and having found that it is made up of a combination of technique and of help to the patient, we show that nursing care cannot be separated from the rest of the nurse’s work, and that administrative aspects should not be overlooked. We explain how the administrative aspects are indispensable to nursing care, which only exists as part of a structure of social relations. The nurse’s administrative work is a means to manage and organise social relations between the patient and the rest of the staff, both nursing and non-nursing. The nurse therefore provides nursing care, and at the same time acts as a permanent intermediary between the patient and the « health workers ». |
