520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | As the tireless advocate of a “new” psychology, Théodule Ribot found in John Stuart Mill’s ethological project many arguments that supported his own conception of the architectonics of the sciences of the mind; but this taking over of the Millian project of “the science of the laws of formation of character” also took place within the context of a larger debate on the the respective shares of “nature” and “culture” in the determination and display of human mental dispositions. As the case of Ribot clearly shows, this French reception of ethology was marked by a distinct emphasis put on the biological causes of character, which sharply contrasts it with Mill’s psychological “artificalism” and his insistence on the “pliability of human nature”. |
