Notre façon de faire de l’histoire de la philosophie, en citant les textes, en les situant, en analysant la structure des œuvres, en suivant les raisonnements pas à pas, lui est redevable. Ce n’est pas dans la critique qu’il est le meilleur, c’est dans la sympathie, voire dans la communion intellectuelle. Sa méthode est intuitive : il fait le portrait d’un penseur et montre les fils directeurs de son œuvre. Ainsi pour Aristote, Böhme, Descartes, Pascal, Leibniz. |

| Summary, etc. | With Boutroux (1845-1921), a new page was turned in the practice of the history of philosophy conceived as an exercise in philosophical thinking: a philosophizing history of philosophy. To a certain extent we owe him the way we do history of philosophy – by quoting the texts, situating them, analyzing the structure of the works we study, following step by step their reasonings. Criticism was not his forte; but he was at his best when sympathizing, sometimes even communing intellectually with his subjects of interest. His method was intuitive: he portrayed a thinker and laid bare the central threads of her work, as he did with Aristote, Böhme, Descartes, Pascal, Leibniz. |
