Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | Romain Rolland and Polish literature Having discovered Polish literature in the writings of Mazzini, which he had been reading since 1895, Romain Rolland became familiar with some texts by Mickiewicz, but most of all fragments by Zygmunt Krasin´ski and Piotr Skarga, which inspired the ending of « Matin » in Jean-Christophe. Later on, he read, without enthousiasm, The Wedding by Stanislaw Wyspian´ski. He admired greatly, however, The Pesants by Reymont. In 1935 he violently criticized Jyliusz Kaden-Bandrowski, who gave a rather strange speech at the Congress of Volta in Mussolini’s Rome. This paper also recalls the admiration of a number of Polish writers and literary critics for the work of Romain Rolland (Sienkiewicz, Orkan, Kleiner, Zeromski, Rudnicki, Broniewski, Strug, Parandowski). |
