| Summary, etc. | Les assertions et les thèses de l’Administration américaine étant d’une évidence apodictique, le fait qu’un allié aussi fidèle et sûr que la France ait élevé une voix dissonante a eu de quoi abasourdir dans un premier temps. Un bras de fer s’est alors engagé entre les deux diplomaties américaine et française, puis il a dégénéré en opposition frontale à peine policée entre les dirigeants des deux pays. Deux logiques sont entrées en collision, celle du primat du « modèle » américain, incontestable et non négociable quelles que soient les circonstances, et celle du recours à la légalité internationale afin de résoudre les conflits entre nations. Au fur et à mesure que les tensions se sont exacerbées, la voix de la France est restée ferme, monocorde et déterminée, une position de principe honorable et respectable. |

| Summary, etc. | An Unruffled and Courageous French Position Since the US Administration’s assertions and arguments were obviously apodictic, France’s opposition, yet considered as a faithful and reliable ally, first stunned the Bush Administration. Then a trial of strength started between the French and the American diplomacies, which degenerated into a barely civilized head-on opposition between the leaders of both countries. Two logics collided with each other : the first one is based on the primacy of an unquestionable and non-negotiable American « model » ; the other believes in the resort to international legality in order to resolve interstate conflicts. As tensions heightened, France maintained a firm, permanent and determined position – a principled stance that is both honorable and respectable. |
