520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. In the second part of the eighteenth-century, the heroïc body became to be like a paradigm of physical strength that corresponded to an inflexible moral fervour and certitude. This image emerged during a period in which fear concerning the physical and moral degeneration of the people was very discussed and tied to the emergence of dominant woman and weak men in the society. In order to cure this degeneration – which was understood to have been caused by generations of physical decline, luxury and immoderation – most of the writings on natural history, medicine, education and anthropoly asserted that the body and the moral faculty could be regenerated if men and women attempted to emulate the strength of their glorious predecessor of the classical antiquity. Fortunately, the beautiful antique sculptures offered physical and moral models that could be emulated. Writings by Winckelmann and his numerous disciples were the principal source of this theory that regeneration and perfectibility could be facilitated bu contemplating beautiful and powerful nude embodying virtue and strength of character. Then, this idea was to keep running through the eugenics theories.
