Summary, etc. | Carolingian royal vassalage remains a little-known institution, as the legal-institutional approach has long disregarded its relational and pragmatic dimension. The present study, which focuses on West Francia between 840 and the end of the tenth century, proposes an approach based on a prosopography of individuals explicitly designated as vassi or vassalli with a chronology that spans the transformations of the Carolingian world. It emerges that the royal vassalage (approximately 40 individuals) is geographically and relationally contrasted (featuring a primary group directly linked to the king and a secondary group mediated by the marquises). Instead of humble warriors promoted by the king for their valour, these vassals are part of an elite integrated into the count’s milieu and well-established regionally. The group disbanded and abandoned the title of vassus dominicus starting in 884 (the death of Carloman II, the reign of Charles the Fat, and then the accession of Odo), allowing Robert of Neustria, at the dawn of the tenth century, to seize it in order to honour the most significant vassals of his principality. |

Summary, etc. |
