| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | Fighting tuberculosis in Le Havre (1879-1939)Between 1879 and 1939, Le Havre forged its image as a pioneer in the fight against tuberculosis. Precursor in the field of public health – the first Health Board in France was founded in 1879 by Jules Siegfried –, the municipality continually innovated to deal with social ills. In 1906, a dispensary was set up to encourage testing sick people ; the hospital was equipped to receive and isolate TB patients while children were sent to its institutions in the countryside to isolate and vaccinate them. These policies underline the determination of local councillors to transform the nineteenth century model. Indeed, in the face of a yet incurable disease, prevention was significantly strengthened and became more democratic. |
