520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. A study on the 19th century social downgrade was carried out thanks to the analysis of more than 5,000 letters of requests for help written by the elite of the Old Regime. It appears that the provincial nobility of the west of France (in Normandy, Brittany and Aquitaine) were particularly impoverished. 87 petitioners from the Norman nobility were identified and researched as to understand their social trajectory. The reasons behind this social downgrade are linked to the political circumstances, in particular to the Revolution, but are also largely due to personal hardships, which bear witness to real social facts. Traits of the Old Regime were perpetuated: women and the younger branches of the lineages were more prone to social decline. Norman petitioners write from Paris, were they live in poverty, even though they are supported by « social investigators ».
