520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Architectural members in the Hellenistic tradition in the oppidum of “Caisses de Jean-Jean”On the south edge of the Mts Alpilles stands the archaeological site of the “Caisses de Jean-Jean”. The oppidum, and the archaeological area related to it below, were several times occupied during their long history (from the 7th cent. bc to the end of the 3rd cent. ad). Fernand Benoit’s excavations, in the 30’s, and those running from 1980, have provided many architectural elements of the Hellenistic style (threshold with narrow rebate and lateral mortice, sawn roof-slabs in opus pavonaceum, corona stones, a Tuscan pilaster capital...). Hewn in a soft limestone, quarried elsewhere, these elements were reused in walls of hard limestone blocks, a coarse masonry bound with clayey soil. They are from several buildings of the second half of the 1st cent. bc. The study of these elements allows us to deduce that a small monumental centre, resembling, technically speaking, the Glanum oppidum, on the north slope of Mts Alpilles, had been erected in this area between the end of the 2nd cent. and the beginning of the 1st cent. bc.
