| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | This note aims first of all to characterize the originality of Pascal’s analysis of slander in Letter XVI of the Provincial Letters by revealing the contradiction that lies between its principle and its result: “evil is so opposed to itself that it thwarts and destroys itself out of its own malice.” By excluding slander from being a sin, the “strange maxim of slander” depletes the credit that the slanderer supposedly has with the one listening to him. Second, as a direct consequence of this, I will recover the text of a citation of Manilius that Pascal takes up in a draft (Laf. 960) of Letter XVI. It must not be read, as in all the editions of the Pensées, as “Fecitque cadendo undique me cadere” (by falling on all sides he made me fall), but rather, following the Astronomicon, as “Fecitque cadendo undique ne caderet.” This should be understood to mean: by falling into sin on all sides, that is, in slandering without restraint, the slanderer ensures that his hearer, who does not believe him, does not fall into it. |
