| Summary, etc. | On the occasion of a study on the morality of Tacitus, in 1686, Amelot de La Houssaye openly criticised the translation of the Latin historian given by Perrot d’Ablancourt in 1640, which had been authoritative until then. The aim here is to analyse the main features of the two translations and to understand the opposition between the craftsman of the “Belles infidèles”, concerned above all with the art of prose in the manner of Guez de Balzac, and the moralist and political thinker who reads Tacitus as a breviary of political thought in the manner of Justus Lipsius. |

| Summary, etc. | À l’occasion d’une étude sur la morale de Tacite, en 1686, Amelot de La Houssaye critique ouvertement la traduction de l’historien latin donnée par Perrot d’Ablancourt en 1640, qui avait fait autorité jusque-là. Il s’agit ici d’analyser les grands traits des deux traductions et de comprendre ce qui oppose l’artisan des « Belles infidèles » soucieux avant tout de l’art de la prose à la manière de Guez de Balzac au moraliste et penseur politique qui lit Tacite comme un bréviaire de la pensée politique à la manière de Juste Lipse. |
