| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | This paper studies the works of Anwar Shā’ul, a Jewish Iraqi intellectual, during the period between the two World Wars. Born in 1904 in Hilla, Shā’ul became one of the nation’s leading journalists and authors of short stories. Shā’ul’s career between the two World Wars demonstrates how Shā’ul opted to construct a Jewish-Arab identity that would reflect his community’s desire to become integrated into the Arab-Iraqi national community while preserving its religious distinctiveness. He both appropriated and manipulated the official language of the state by asserting that national Arab unity meant the inclusion of Arab-Jews in Iraqi culture. Living in a period characterized by religious and ethnic strife, Shā’ul and his fellow intellectuals (Jewish, Muslim and Christians alike) attempted to convey a more tolerant, democratic perception of the Iraqi State. |
