520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Focusing on Emerson’s “‘Address to the Citizens of Concord’ on the Fugitive Slave Law” (1851) and his opposition to the Compromise of 1850, this study explores the issue of slavery in America from the perspective of a New Englander. Although Emerson holds life, liberty, and equality to be universal and inalienable rights, uncertainties as to the nature of America’s political compact and the delimitation of the nation’s boundaries end up calling the primacy of natural law into question. If slavery must be abolished and if New England should lead the way towards the regeneration of a Union corrupted by the “peculiar institution,” it remains doubtful whether the new nation whose advent Emerson is prophesying should actually extend beyond the frontiers of White Anglo-Saxon Massachusetts.
