| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | From the years 1467–1477, Louis XI became the target of literary opposition by rhetoricians serving rival princes. The most famous is probably the metaphor of the “universal spider,” which has been widely circulated since P.M. Kendall’s 1971 biography – though in a sense that departs sharply from the original mythological reference (the myth of Arachne). This article analyzes the meaning of this metaphor in the fifteenth century, along with other animal metaphors used during Louis XI’s reign. |
