| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | There is no shortage of staircases in Paul Gadenne’s Le Vent noir (1947). Many important scenes take place there. Far from being a mere element of the setting, this place of passage fulfills an obvious symbolic function by transforming wanderings into initiatory quests. A place of waiting and encounter, the staircase embodies the metaphysical aspirations of a hero in search of love, but also of redemption. It marks the necessity of connection as well as its impossibility. The ambivalence of this symbol has not escaped the novelist, who exploits its positive and negative aspects to better signal his hero’s ascent or regression. This is why the novel can be read as a drama of verticality that combines the promise of ascension with the call of the abyss. |
