| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | Dudon de Saint-Quentin’s Hasting, the perverse VikingDudon’s first book is devoted to Hasting, a Viking chief responsible for most of the atrocities committed during the 9th century. The portrait is devastating and Hasting appears responsible for pillage and is described using classical and biblical terms of reprobation. The main traits of this charismatic leader are easily identifiable. Hasting is portrayed as a destroyer of churches and towns who massacres the innocent. His success is due to his treachery, lack of scruples and infinite perversity. According to Dudon, the secret of this hideous person is due to his complete enslavement to Evil (the Devil) which is illustrated by his furious energy to destroy all altars, sacred vessels, churches and ecclesiastics in his path. Yet, Hasting played an important role on the road to Salvation. |
