| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | Human beings are communication beings. When a child is deprived of sound social relationships he suffers of serious development impairments. In humans, communication is firstly multi-canal and permanent. Language comes second. This is why animals may have true relationships with humans, although they are not language creatures. Human/animal interactions and communication rely first on touch and gaze, and this tunes the relationship at once in the intimate mode. The mere presence of an animal might also facilitate social communication. Most importantly, the human/animal relationship has some characteristics that give a real therapeutic potential to it. Because the communication is mostly nonverbal and relational, many patients are able to efficiently relate to animals although they are very deficient in their contacts with other human beings. According to the specific difficulties of the patient and to the therapist’s choices, several aspects of the human/animal interaction may be used in a therapeutic setting. |
