520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The sober expression of children’s portraits in sculpture and reliefs of the Republican and Imperial Roman periods constitutes a visual code that does not express personal feelings. The physical restraint of these children, alive or dead, is related to a normative educational discourse that trains control of emotions. It displays a self‑control which associates them with the elite, and betrays the social aspirations of their relatives. Their attitude also reveals a way of thinking of childhood as a special period devoted to the training of body and mind. |
