| Summary, etc. | Cet article suit les grandes étapes qui conduisent à la constitution d’une philosophie de l’histoire républicaine en France, en s’arrêtant sur l’œuvre de l’un de ses maîtres : Edgar Quinet. Les contre-révolutionnaires avaient revendiqué les droits de la société contre ceux du peuple, en affirmant que le tout social est irréductible au consensus des volontés individuelles. Aussi fallait-il montrer que la promesse révolutionnaire était elle-même inscrite au plus profond des aspirations sociales, ce qui impliquait une lecture sociologique de l’histoire, dont Guizot et Saint-Simon fournirent la trame. Et c’est contre cette interprétation « sociologique » de l’histoire que Quinet a cherché à réactiver la spiritualité moderne qui s’est manifestée avec la Révolution française, en posant la valeur sacrée de la personne. |

| Summary, etc. | This paper maps out the main stages leading to the construction of a Republican philosophy of history in France by focusing on the works of one of its masters, Edgar Quinet. The counter-revolutionaries had championed the rights of society against those of the people, on the grounds that society was not reducible to a consensus of individual wills, which made it necessary to show that the revolutionary promise itself was embedded in the deepest social aspirations, and called for a sociological approach to history whose storyline was provided by Guizot and Saint-Simon. Quinet challenged this “sociological” interpretation of history and endeavoured to revive a modern form of spirituality that emerged during the French Revolution by positing the sacred value of the individual. |
