| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | Anthropologists have always been intrigued by monkeys and apes, to such a degree that referring to primates appears as a near necessary passage for any anthropological program aiming at a general conception of the discipline. Primatology stabilizes anthropology, as most confrontations with monkeys and apes have led to reasserting the exclusivity of the discipline’s main concepts and epistemological principles. However, some primatological research does question that exclusivity. From an epistemological perspective, rethinking the place of primates and other animals in anthropology amounts to striking a new balance between causal and intentional explanations of their behaviors. This approach is as much an efficient buffer against naive intentionality concerning non-humans, as it is a stabilizer of anthropology in the face of biological theories’ reductionism. |
