| Summary, etc. | Trois ethnologues ont profondément modifié notre vision de l’art paléolithique : Annette Laming-Emperaire, André Leroi-Gourhan et Alain Testart. Ils ont chacun démontré que la décoration des cavernes n’était pas due au hasard et relevait d’une organisation symbolique, suivant un schéma et un programme, adapté ensuite à la topographie de chaque grotte. Alain Testart est allé le plus loin, en formulant vingt propositions, qui fonctionnent comme autant d’opérateurs de pensée. La grotte est pour lui une matrice, le lieu de l’expression de mythes d’origine comme du mode de pensée totémique des hommes préhistoriques. Qu’on accepte ou pas ses propositions, le préhistorien ne peut pas les ignorer. Il devra prendre parti et se positionner par rapport à elles. Trois axes de recherche sont possibles : l’étude des liens inter-espèces, peut-être un peu vite évacué par Alain Testart ; le « mode d’utilisation » des grottes ornées, ou la recherche de comportements souterrains (rituels ?) ; enfin, la recherche de classifications ou d’organisations similaires à celles qu’Alain a proposées, comme des « symétries » et « tourbillons ». À nous de veiller à ce que la pensée d’Alain nous serve de guide et ne se transforme pas en dogme. |

| Summary, etc. | There are three ethnologists who changed our vision about palaeolithic art: Annette Laming-Emperaire, André Leroi-Gourhan and Alain Testart. Each of them proved that the decoration of the caves was not due to hazard, but was part of a symbolic organization, following a schema (an outline) and a program (plan) adapted afterwards to the topography of every cave. Alain Testart went further and elaborated twenty propositions which work equally as thinking operators. In his mind the cave is a matrix, the place where the myths of the origin as well as the totemic mode of thinking of the prehistorics express themselves. You may agree with these propositions or not, but a prehistorian researcher cannot ignore them. He will have to side with them and give his opinion on their concern. There are three research possibilities: the study of links between the species, possibility which Alain Testart evacuated a little fast; study the way the decorated caves were used, that is research on the behaviour under ground (rituals?); and finally research on classifications or organizations similar to those proposed by Alain Testart like “symmetries” and “whirl-winds”. It will be up to us to see that the thinking of Alain may help us and be our guide, not a dogma. |
