520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. From the ghostly image to blessed illusions (experiences of spiritism) Occultism developed in the 19th century. The photograph is used as a means to record paranormal and supernatural phenomena (aura, ectoplasm, phantomatic forms, spectral forms of the deceased). Many “spiritist” photographers offer the bereaved the opportunity of one last encounter with their loved one. It is thus a question not only of bringing back the deceased, but of fixing his image, printing his presence, and making absence “illusory”. The spiritist movement, had it not been so resoundingly successful, could have been a mere historical anecdote. But the questions it raises concern both the conflict between the growing influence of positivist and scientistic theories and the emergence of a belief in the occult on the one hand, and, on the other, the question of illusion as a necessity, a hallucinatory journey where belief in the apparition and the conviction of a presence are found side by side.
