Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | The Elementary Forms and the contemporary sociologyThe theory of religion proposed in The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life is one of the most discussed parts of Durkheim’s work. Criticisms were made from various standpoints. It did not prevent Durkheim’s exegetes from elaborating on the theory it embodied. Nevertheless, the book’s influence could have been expected to be on the decline. On the contrary, it gave rise to a surge of interest in the last decades of the twentieth century. In the course of the Thirties already, Parsons had emphasized the importance of symbolism in The Elementary Forms. This symbolic dimension proved to be stimulating to the works of Bellah, Alexander and Habermas. As for Boudon, it is the rationalist element in the Durkheimian theory that drew his attention. He considers the line of reasoning presented in the book as a major contribution to the sociology of knowledge. |
