520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The headscarf disputeThe question of Muslim pupils wearing the so-called “Islamic” headscarf has provoked an intense polemic in France three times, in 1989, in 1994 and in 2002. The adoption of a law banning any religious symbols in public schools essentially concerned the headscarf, that is to say young women, making it possible for them to be expelled from the state school system. It is important to situate these debates in their national and international context to understand the intensity of them and explain the rupture they provoked within the feminist movements. |
