Confronté au problème de la préservation de l’ordre républicain, il doit gérer tant sur le plan théorique que pratique le passage d’une logique révolutionnaire à une position conservatrice visant à protéger le système politico-institutionnel né de la révolution. Ainsi, l’équivocité de son parcours intellectuel naît de la distinction entre les principes libéraux applicables à une société pacifiée et les méthodes illibérales que l’État assume d’utiliser contre ceux qu’il identifie comme ses ennemis. |
