Il s’agit d’un essai rédigé avant son entrée à l’Université de Harvard et ses travaux sur la théorie de la concurrence monopolistique. Ce document comporte plusieurs intuitions explicites préfigurant la théorie du duopole que développera Chamberlin dans le cadre de sa thèse (1927), confirmant l’importance de l’oligopole comme premier pas vers l’idée de différenciation du produit (1961). De plus, cette manière de présenter sa théorie introduit une lecture alternative de celle-ci, l’éloignant de la théorie de la concurrence imparfaite de Joan V.
