Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | How did the medical denomination of « nostalgia » arise ? Here, the author proposes to consider a process in two stages. Firstly, medicine at the end of the seventeenth century declared itself competent to explain the psychological symptoms it took cognisance of. Secondly, medicine backed up its description using examples gathered from the classical literary field. In particular, it called on Homer, Virgil and Ovid to justify the image it built up of nostalgia. As from the eighteenth century, it was suggested that the loss of personal relations, especially for children, was more significant than the « change of air » generally argued for. |
