Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Textbooks are heavily influenced by the ideologies of the dominant groups and do not constitute objective or neutral teaching materials (Amalsaleh, Javid, & Rahimi, 2010). The present study examined how textbooks use language to disseminate a specific language ideology in which the Valencian language does not have the same linguistic status as the Castilian language in Spain. With this goal in mind, the subject titles present on 38 textbook covers in the Community of Valencia were analyzed. The results of this study showed that the linguistic construction llengua valenciana i literatura (Valencian language and literature) is intentionally avoided. This linguistic ideology was manifested by the semiotic process of erasure (Irvine & Gal, 2000) and by the use of specific lexical choice. This study argues that the avoidance of the expression llengua valenciana i literatura is ideologically motivated with the intention to lower the linguistic status of the Valencian language, one of the co-official languages in Spain. |
