| Summary, etc. | Die moralische Ökonomie der Adipositas-Chirurgie: Kontinuität der Stigmatisierung oder dauerhafte Entstigmatisierung – Basierend auf wiederkehrenden Interviews mit “fettleibigen” Patienten, die sich einer Operation unterziehen dürfen, hinterfragt der Artikel die Bedeutungskonstruktion bei Patienten und medizinischem Fachpersonal in Bezug auf den Wechsel im moralischen Werdegang im Hinblick auf die Gewichtszunahme als persönlichem “Verschulden” und der Wahl der Operation als ”bequemer Lösung”. Der Artikel zeigt, unter welchen Bedingungen diese Aushandlung des chirurgischen Weges eine legitime Kategorie von aktiven Patienten entstehen lässt, die für die mit Hilfe der Operation verursachten körperlichen Transformationen Verantwortung übernehmen. Damit wird präzisiert in welchem Zusammenhang die Adipositas-Chirurgie einen Hebel zur Überwindung des Stigmas, welches mit abweichender Korpulenz verbunden ist, darstellen kann. |

| Summary, etc. | The moral economy of obesity surgery : continuing stigma or lasting destigmatisation ? – Drawing on repeated interviews with ‘obese’ patients who were authorized to undergo bariatric surgery, this article questions the work of meaning-making carried out by patients and the medical staff, in an attempt to inflect the moral career that associates weight gain with personal “fault” and the choice of surgery with an “easy way out”. This article shows under which conditions this negotiation contributes to the emergence of a legitimate category of patients, who are both active and responsible for the bodily transformations produced with surgical support. In doing so, it explains how bariatric surgery can be used to break down the stigma associated with a deviant body type. |
