520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Drawing upon a literature review and on qualitative surveys with early retirees conducted over the last twenty years, this paper deals with both the societal and individual aspects of the “trial” of retirement. First, it reviews the socio-historical transformations of retirement, identifying three successive social representations of it: rest, leisure, and “active aging.” Second, it describes the diversity of individual experiences of retirement by examining several dimensions: the decision to retire, the process of identity reconstruction following it, the financial and marital dimensions, as well the requirement for individuals to confront their own aging. |
