Summary, etc. | Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables was a success in Portugal, going through 28 re-printings between 1862 and 1983. At first, Hugo’s work undoubtedly bridged a gap in the Portuguese novel. This warm welcome is proof, among other things, that the cultural elite was francophile. However, we should also note that none of the translators was well known and that these translations were conceived for the general public. This is why Hugo’s novel loses much of its social or even revolutionary scope. |
