Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The words we use to refer to death, bereavement and burial are inherited from past generations, confronted in their time with situations similar to ours. This article reflects on the origins of such terms by analysing their etymology and the meaning they had for our ancestors, before examining how such meanings have changed over the centuries. Take for instance, the term ‘man’, referring not only to ancestors but also to earth, death, and the spirit. When the soul leaves the body, a separation takes place which, like that with the family and community, is expressed not only in specific words but also through rituals. Funeral rites aim at ensuring eternal rest for the departed and protecting the legacy of their memory, as well as providing peace of mind for those left behind. These customs and their corresponding representations are expressed in words rich in meaning. This leads us on to an exploration of the language and form of funeral orations, be they epitaphs, orations or elegies. |
