Un bourgeois, Gui de Corvo, décédé depuis huit jours, revient hanter sa demeure et terroriser sa veuve. Celle-ci en appelle aux consuls puis au prieur des dominicains. Une délégation menée par le prieur Jean Gobi, suivi des notables de la ville, se rend sur place. Deux nuits d’interrogatoires de cet esprit auraient été prises en note par un notaire. Ce texte et ses amplifications successives posent la question de la nature de cette voix. Comment le prieur met-il en condition les assistants pour les convaincre qu’il s’agit bien de celle de l’esprit de Gui ? Comment oblige-t-il cette voix à répondre à ses questions ? Quel message est-elle censée délivrer aux vivants ? Quelle fonction ce type de texte a-t-il pu assumer dans la promotion du culte des âmes du purgatoire dans les derniers siècles du Moyen Âge ? |

| Summary, etc. | In the town of Alès an event was widely talked about in winter 1323. Gui de Corvo, a burgher who died eight days ago, came back to haunt his own house and terrify his widow. She called first the consuls, then the Dominican prior for help. A delegation led by the prior Jean Gobi and followed by the town notables went to the house. A two-nights spirit’s questioning would have been registered by a notary. This text and its successive developments raise the question of the nature of this voice. How did the prior condition the audience into believing that it was really the spirit’s voice ? How did he make this voice answer his questions ? What message was it supposed to deliver to the living ? How did this kind of text contribute to promote the purgatory souls’ cult in the last centuries of the Middle Ages ? |

Ein Bürger, Gui de Corvo, der seit acht Tagen gestorben war, kam zurück, um in seinem Haus zu spuken und seine Frau zu terrorisieren. Diese wand sich hilfesuchend zuerst an die Konsule, dann an den Dominikanerprior. Eine Delegation, die von dem Prior Jean Gobi gefürht und von den Stadtprominenz gefolgt wurde, begab sich an Ort und Stelle. Das Verhören dieses Geistes während zwei Nächten wäre von einem Notar notiert worden. Diese Registrierung und ihre folgende entwickelten Fassungen stellen die Frage der Natur dieser Stimme.
