| Summary, etc. | This article explores how the Australian author Brian Castro’s debut novel Birds of Passage (1983) interrogates questions of subjectivity, nation and language through the practice of translation. It argues that Birds of Passage is a post-monolingual novel challenging the Romantic equation of authentic subjectivity with expression in a “mother tongue.” Furthermore, the representation of self-translation, both as a practice and a metaphor, is shown to be fundamental to Castro’s reflection upon contemporary Australian identity. |
