Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Three acts mark the path of Lévi-Strauss’ works: the erasure of Man through the symbolic function, the struggle against the colonial « lesser Man », the search for the « Man surplus » in art. Lévi-Strauss erases the present-at-himself cartesian subject, by introducing the concept of structural unconscious. His critique of sartrian historic subject, in chapter IX of The Savage Mind, is based on this erasure. The so-called bricolage (« odd job ») is then to be understood as the production of a signification surplus, by mean of the symbolic function. Lévi-Strauss draws two consequences from this cogito’s erasure. He grounds upon the universal rationality of the structural unconscious, his struggle against the racist ideology and politic of the « lesser Man ». But, strangely, he keeps silent about Holocaust, and we try to explain why. Furthermore, starting from the Finale of The Naked Man, and in his last opus, he moves towards the idea that a surplus of being, a « Man surplus », are within reach in art. |
