520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | An Impossible Local Heritage: Nostradamus in Salon-de-Provence (1980-1999)Proceeding from the case of Michel de Nostradamus and Salon-de-Provence at the end of the xxth century, this paper examines the memorial, symbolic, and economic relations which an average-sized town maintains with a local figure whose stigmatising connotations are at variance with notions of modernity or tradition to which local heritage actors subscribe. The convergence or divergence between the local and the national or international forces become blurred behind an interlacing of manœuvres: rehabilitation combining reinvention and effacement, borrowed elements and reappropriations, hesitant refusals and re-routings. The paper looks at one museum in particular, as well as at tourism, cultural and neighbourhood associations, the press and annual historical re-enactments. |
