Comment expliquer un tel succès, dans la communauté historienne et au-dehors ? L’histoire du texte, de sa production et de ses réceptions, dont la première, au lendemain de la Libération, permet d’envisager l’œuvre dans le contexte de la « guerre des écrivains » (1940-1953) mais aussi comme un vecteur particulier de la mémoire de la période, de 1947 à nos jours. |

It is in the news for two reasons—firstly, it was brought out last year by its historical publishing house and, secondly, its first-ever English translation has just appeared. How can one explain such a success story both within and outside the community of historians? The story of the text, of the way it was published, and the various ways it was received—the first time immediately after the Liberation—allows the work to be considered not only in the context of the “French writers’ war” (1940-1953) but also as a special means of transmitting the memory of the period from 1947 until today. |
