520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Communication, Politics and Identity Trajectories in Wallis and FutunaWallis (also known as Uvea) and Futuna form a tiny archipelago of 142 km located in the north of Western Polynesia. Before becoming French territories in 1961, these islands had a subsistence economy consisting of agriculture and marine resources. In the 1960s, the French administration established public services in the territories. This paper attempts to analyse the political, social, cultural and identity transformations in Wallis and Futuna over the last four decades. Today, the aga‵ifenua (custom and tradition) still plays an essential role in everyday life and acts as a decisive key in social relationships which connect the chieftainships, the Catholic clergy, the French administration and local politics. However modern French and global influences have impacted on traditional ways : many Wallisians and Futunans have emigrated from their homelands, especially to New Caledonia and to France, and are now building a unique blend of Wallisian and Futunan-infused multiculturalism « out of the country ».
