| Summary, etc. | À l’époque moderne, le mariage doit conduire à l’enfantement. L’impuissance, quand elle est établie, constitue un empêchement pour unir un homme et une femme et donc une cause d’annulation si le mariage a été célébré. La rupture de ce qui est un sacrement (catholique) ou une bénédiction (protestante) et aussi un contrat passé entre les époux, ne peut pas se réduire à une affaire privée. D’où des affaires judiciaires compliquées et très publiques à cause des enjeux religieux et sociétaux. Il y a aussi un évident voyeurisme. Le Tribunal de l’impuissance étudié par Pierre Darmon (1979) reposait sur des cas concernant les élites sociales et documentés par des sources imprimées. Notre dossier d’archives concerne un artisan cloutier de village, qui est aussi un « ancien » dans une paroisse luthérienne, accusé par sa femme de ne pas la satisfaire. Il comprend un rapport du pasteur sur le trouble causé dans la paroisse et une expertise médicale du mari. |

| Summary, etc. | In the Early Modern era, marriage was supposed to lead to childbirth. Impotency, once ascertained, would be an impediment to the union of a man and a woman, and therefore a cause for annulment if the wedding had alrteady taken place. Breaking vows which were sacred (for Catholics) or blessed (for Protestants), as well as a contract between spouses, could not be a purely private business. Hence the resulting extremely complex and highly public judicial proceedings, given what was at stake for both society and religion —not mentioning the obvious voyeurism involved. The Impotency Tribunal studied by Pierre Darmon in 1979 was adjucating cases drawn from social elites and documented by printed sources. Our archival fund deals with a village crafstman, a Lutheran nail-maker who was also an elder in the Lutheran parish, and was accused by his wife of not being able to satisfy her. The fund includes a report of the minister on the trouble made in the parish, and a medical appraisal of the husband. |

La impotencia, cuando es cierta, constituye un impedimento a la unión de un hombre y de una mujer y, por lo tanto, una causa de anulación, cuando el matrimonio ha sido celebrado. La ruptura de lo que es un sacramento (católicos) o una bendición (protestantes) y también un contrato entre los esposos, no es solo un asunto privado. De ahí, unos pleitos complicados y muy públicos en razón de los problemas planteados, religiosos y sociales. Y es también, evidentemente, cosa de mirones y mironas. El Tribunal de la impotencia estudiado por Pierre Darmon (1979) se basaba en casos referidos a las elites y documentados en fuentes impresas. En nuestro caso, se trata de un artesano fabricante de clavos del pueblo, que es también un “anciano” de la parroquia luterana, que su mujer acusa de no satisfacerla. Contiene un informe del pastor sobre los disturbios en la parroquia y un examen médico del marido. |
