520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | Autism in infants of recent immigration : explanatory models in families from Maghreb countriesThis qualitative ethnographic study documents the belief systems and therapeutic choices of ten immigrant parents from Maghreb countries who have a child diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder in Quebec. We conducted both semi-structured interviews with the parents and participant observation at support groups for the mothers. Our results show a coexistence of biomedical, religious and traditional explanatory models. These different beliefs influence the parents’therapeutic choices of both modern approaches largely accepted in Canada and spiritual and traditional therapies accepted in the Maghreb. Religion plays a particularly important role in the acceptance of the child’s condition. Open-mindedness and respect for the parents’beliefs and therapeutic choices are key elements in facilitating therapeutic alliance. |

Summary, etc. |
