Summary, etc. | This paper examines the nature of the two institutions related to the birth of French opera: the Académie d’opéras, created by Pierre Perrin in 1669, whose privilege was bought by Jean-Baptiste Lully in 1672, founder of the Académie royale de musique. In the diversity of their functioning and their purpose, the two academies are the result of a crossover between the model of the Italian courtly opera, conceived by and designed for an elite—the “connoisseurs”—and new commercial requirements imposed by concerns of an entrepreneurial nature. |
