Entre les premiers textes qui exaltèrent ces deux épopées et notre temps, un millénaire. Et, dans les deux cas, des ennemis désignés, fourbes, cruels, parfois inhumains, les Arabes, les musulmans, les Sarrasins. Deux batailles gigantesques… et deux mythes solidement ancrés dans le roman national.Et pourtant, Poitiers ne fut pas un affrontement entre armées géantes, mais un accrochage, certes violent, mais relativement bref, entre les fantassins francs et la cavalerie sarrasine. Par contre, de Sarrasins il n’y eut point dans la vallée pyrénéenne, et le preux neveu de Charlemagne succomba sous les coups d’assaillants basques. |
