520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Jorge Luis Borges was strongly attracted to certain metaphysical subjects. His conception of metaphysics was, however, singularly provocative: for him, it was only a branch of fantastic literature. From this assertion, which seems to invalidate metaphysics in its epistemic aspirations, we examine some metaphysical theses of Spinoza and Leibniz as they were taken up by the belles lettres of the Argentine writer. Namely: the rejection of an anthropomorphic Divinity, the religious feeling which would animate Spinoza’s Ethics, things as theophanies for the human being, the topic of sameness and otherness, the metaphysics of mirrors, the relationship of universal expression. Far from pretending to make Borges the philosopher that he was not, our treatment aims to show how the Argentinian breathed literary life into these ideas by the amazing power of his imagination. |
