Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | By interpreting the seraglio novel in the Lettres persanes as a symbol for despotism, hasn’t it been, as Kundera says, “orwellized”? Hasn’t its novelistic dimension been neglected? In the seraglio, many startling twist are at stake: on the one hand, Montesquieu uses it to imagine a reticular form of power. He enjoys at conceiving new crafty ways to govern, that anticipate biopolitics then in its early stages. On the other hand, he questions the delusion of an omnipotent power. Overwhelming as the power in the seraglio may be, passions and actors, building on its inherent contradiction, hijack it, making him functionning by unexpected ways. Besides, Montesquieu imagines what the conscience of supposedly wholly enslaved individuals would be: torn between half-lucidity and blindness, both ally of the power and rebel, Usbek’s women break free of their supposedly initial features. |
