520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Our brief study shows that The Spirit of the Laws was of great interest in Russia during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but that the translators, guided by patriotism and/or censorship, treated the text in a particular way. Indeed, the first translations of The Spirit of the Laws share a common feature: all passages relating to Russia and Russians were revised. Moreover, a translator like Egot Karnaev was able to use the text to present his opinions and disagreements with Montesquieu, especially when it came to Russia. The translation becomes a pretext to defend the Christian faith and the tsarist regime, regretting the changes due to the French Revolution. |
