Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Advances in reproductive biotechnologies raise questions regarding what is possible and what is desirable. These questions stem from the numerous possibilities for disruption that these technologies create. Disruptions in origin: a child may be the result of sperm, oocyte, or embryo donation, or of surrogate gestation, thus involving serial disruptions in filiations. Disruptions in gender and difference: procreation within female couples or by single women, in male couples or by single men, or procreation by transgender people. Disruptions in prediction: through advances in genomics, a link will be increasingly made possible between procreation and prediction, a link which could occupy an ever more important place in the conception of children. Will we eventually be able to predict the child? What will be the place left to chance, to the unexpected? Beyond any temptation to conservatism, there is a need to be prepared to accompany increasingly novel modes of procreation, in a world that is being invented faster than our ability to follow it. |
