Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Despite the difficulties that deaf people have with the written word, many communicate on a daily basis using SMS’s (Power & Power, 2004). They use lexical manipulations spontaneously, which is the subject of analysis in this article. The SMS’s of 6 teenagers and 4 adults, severely and profoundly deaf, were collected. Two factors are taken into account in the productivity and the linguistic processing: the age of the writers and the status of their interlocutors (deaf or hearing person). It is clear that deaf teenagers and adults have a high SMS productivity. They utilize linguistic processing adapted to the medium, and which varies depending on the age and status of the interlocutor. Adults produce more correct words than teenagers, particularly when the interlocutor is a hearing person. Three case studies are presented in order to illustrate and clarify the scripting processes observed. |
